Young Women of Promise serves as the lead administrative agency for the Kinston Promise Neighborhood.
Young Women of Promise, Inc., (YWOP) promotes the involvement of parents, families, educators, business and community leaders in programs that provide academic, social and community service learning activities. Young Women of Promise, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation founded in September of 2001 by Kinston, NC native Theresa Williams Bethea. Our mission is to prepare African-American adolescent females and other youth for success. We strive for a society where all youth are respected as powerful leaders and active community members.

America’s Promise is a national organization founded by Colin and Alma Powell. America’s Promise focuses on five core promises for youth: caring adults, safe places, a healthy start, effective education, and opportunities to help others. America’s Promise Grad Nation initiative is a collection of individuals and organizations dedicated to ending America’s drop out crisis. The Grad Nation goals include: achieving a 90% graduation rate nationwide by 2020, with no high school graduating less than 80% of its students, and regaining America’s standing as first in the world in college completion. Kinston Promise Neighborhood and the City of Kinston have been designated a Grad Nation Community. Through this designation, Kinston Promise Neighborhood is able to leverage learning and best practices from other Grad Nation communities, while also having access to technical assistance from America’s Promise.

Greene Lamp provides programs and services to assist families in moving out of poverty and to reduce the suffering caused by poverty. Greene Lamp serves families in Greene and Lenoir Counties through a range of services and programs, including Head Start, More at Four, Three School, the Self-Sufficiency Program, and a local Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Youth program.

Junior Achievement partners businesses and educators to provide students in grades K-12 with the tools and understanding they need to succeed in today’s economy. Volunteers provide hands-on, age appropriate activities and programs to educate students on business and entrepreneurship.

The Crossing Boundaries program is a funded through a partnership with Kinston Public Safety and the N.C. Governor’s Crime Commission. Through this partnership, a community coordinator assesses the needs of young criminal offenders and utilizes resources of education, police, courts, churches, family, community, and many other resources to assist the offender in becoming a productive individual.
La Voz ENC
La Voz serves as “the voice” of Eastern North Carolina’s Spanish-speaking community. The organization focuses on helping permanent and long-term non-English-speaking residents connect with the community.
Lenoir County Cooperative Extension
The Lenoir County Cooperative Extension Center is part of a network of centers supported by NC State University and NC A&T University. The Cooperative Extension Centers facilitate 4-H Youth Development organizations for thousands of North Carolina’s youth, including those in Lenoir County. The Cooperative Extension office also provides training for adults and youth volunteers to become community leaders and to stimulate community economic development in their area. Finally, the Extension Center provides support and resources to families around health, nutrition, early childhood, and parenting.

Lenoir County Public Schools operates eighteen schools across the county. Kinston Promise Neighborhood partners with four of these schools, all of which serve students from East Kinston, the target impact area of the organization: Southeast Elementary School, Northeast Elementary School, Rochelle Middle School, and Kinston High School.

The Mitchelltown Preservation Society is a historic preservation group committed to restoring the Mitchelltown Historic District in Kinston. The primary goal is to prevent misuse of the historic district and its properties. Since 2006, Mitchelltown has been part of the Community Watch Program and periodically conducts organized Clean Up Days.

NC FIELD is a non-profit organization in North Carolina with a mission to forge relationships to fill service gaps in the farmworker community, and to increase awareness of the plight of the farmworker. We work primarily with migrant and seasonal farmworker youth utilizing inter-generational organizing principles to teach leadership, promote education, and facilitate opportunities and experiential learning. NC FIELD works with children and youth, as well as families, employed in agriculture with a mission of filling service gaps and increasing awareness about the plight of farmworkers.

The Partnership for Children is part of a state-wide network that serves all 100 North Carolina counties by managing and distributing state Smart Start funds to local early childhood initiatives. The Partnership for Children is primarily supported by state Smart Start funds, NC Pre-K funds, grants, and private donations. In addition to administering state funds, Partnership for Children also provides training for educators and parents, health services, community outreach, and child safety.

Project Promise Mentoring Alliance is an alliance of Lenoir County mentoring agencies committed to serving youth in grades 6-12 by inspiring and empowering them with a passion for learning and success. The primary goal of Project Promise is to help middle and high school youth become confident and productive, stay in school, and set goals for the future. The Project Promise Mentoring Alliance includes Young Women of Promise, a youth leadership development initiative for young women in grades 5-12, and Little by Little, a mentoring program for elementary school students. Faith-based community partners include St. Augustus A.M.E. Zion Church; Church of Faith and Deliverance, Queen Street United Methodist Church, the GATE of Lenoir County, Greater St. Paul United Holy Church of America, and St. Mark Church Ministries, Inc.
Other local community partners include Compassion Outreach Community Development Corporation, Kinston Community Health Center, Lenoir County Health Department, Lenoir County Department of Public Safety, Lenoir Community College, and Young Women’s Outreach Center.
Kinston Promise Neighborhood, Inc. will continue to pursue opportunities to add community partners and programs to the continuum of support.
